Some things are meant to be. Some are just obvious. J.R. Smith and the Cavaliers were always the former this summer. After a long wait, he has announced that he is coming back.
Happy to say that I am returning to the Cavs! It’s been a long ride this summer but I can say for sure, well worth the wait. When I opted out of my contract, I wanted to understand the landscape of the NBA and where I fit best. The Cavaliers had things they needed to do in order to piece together a championship caliber roster. I ended up deciding that instead of potentially securing a larger deal elsewhere, I wanted to rejoin an incredible organization in pursuit of the ultimate goal, an NBA championship. Thank you to the Cavaliers for making this happen. Can’t wait to get started! #TheLand
After a stellar regular season and Eastern Conference Playoffs, the Cavs' swingman struggled mightily in the Finals against a Golden State team overflowing with the lengthy defenders that disrupted the pin downs and curls he thrives on. Still, as Carter put it earlier today, the Cavs needed him back badly, and Smith has obliged.
With only Tristan Thompson remaining, the Cavs have brought back almost all of a team that rampaged through the second half of the season and playoffs. While Smith doesn't figure to make a massive impact on their final record, his presence should further assure their standing atop the East, providing a 3 barrage that few in the NBA match.
Chris Haynes of NEOMG reports the terms of J.R.'s deal are as follows:
J.R. Smith also has a no-trade clause, I'm told.— Chris Haynes (@ChrisBHaynes) August 21, 2015
