Rick Carlisle is one of the best basketball coaches in the world. He led his Dallas Mavericks to an upset victory over the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals and has won just about everywhere he's gone. The Mavericks are currently overachieving in a year many thought they would tank. He knows what he's doing. He's also the current president of the NBA Coaches Association. Part of the job is sticking up for his own. When asked about the Cavaliers' firing of David Blatt on Friday afternoon, he did not mince words.
According to Tim MacMahon of espn.com, Carlisle came out firing:
"I'm embarrassed for our league that something like this can happen like this," Carlisle said. "It's just bizarre. ... It just leaves you with a bit of an empty feeling, because Blatt's a great guy, and he did a great job there."
Carlisle referred to Blatt as "one of the best coaches in history" based on his success in Europe and international basketball. He praised Blatt for successfully adapting and adjusting to the NBA game after spending his entire career coaching overseas.
Carlisle goes on to say that he's sure David Blatt will be in demand this summer when openings come up. It'll be curious to see where he turns up. It's been a crazy day. Never a dull moment with this Cavs team.
