New Cavs coach Tyronn Lue may soon have a new assistant on his staff.
According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, the Cavs are set to hire to former Suns assistant Mike Longabardi to join Lue's staff. As noted by Waiting For Next Year's Scott Sargent, Lue mentioned Longabardi during his media availability before Saturday's loss to the Bulls. Chris Haynes of cleveland.com also reported that Longabardi was set to join Lue's staff and added that Longabardi will set next to Lue on the bench.
Longabardi, who has also worked for the Celtics and Rockets during his NBA coaching career, was fired by the Suns earlier this season when Phoenix decided it needed to shake up coach Jeff Hornacek's staff. In Boston, he and Lue were co-workers for four years under Clippers coach Doc Rivers.
In Phoenix, Longabardi headed up the Suns' defense. It is unclear what sort of role he will take with the, as Lue said on Friday that the plan is for him to continue heading up the defense and will work with the Cavs' other assistant coaches to organize the offense.
