On the heels of news that Johnny Manziel might have blown off the NFL's concussion protocol to party in Vegas in disguise, LeBron James expressed concern for the Cleveland Browns quarterback. Just a few hours later, his business agency LRMR is cutting professional ties with Manziel.
According to Cleveland.com, the move is in line with a move away from marketing as LeBron James and LRMR expand their business empire. Still, the timing tells you all you need to know.
James' company is shifting its focus away from endorsements and Manziel's football career may be at a crossroads as he continues to deal with personal issues.
"We've decided to end our formal business relationship with Johnny," said Maverick Carter, James' long-time friend and business partner who runs LRMR, the agency which until now had represented Manziel in endorsement deals.
"I will continue to support and advise him as a friend," Carter said. "However, because Johnny needs to focus on personal growth, the next phase of his career and because LRMR continues to expand beyond marketing, we made the mutual decision that it was best to terminate our business relationship."
It's an interesting time for Johnny Manziel, who has talent that would normally buy him a second chance somewhere else in the league. This latest incident is so outrageous, though, that it wouldn't be shocking to see 32 NFL teams decide they can't stomach the persona and show. On a basic level, at this point, you hope Manziel can find some sort of support system. It's too late for him in Cleveland; it's LeBron James now, and it'll be the Cleveland Browns soon. You have to wish him the best.
