After suffering a concussion in last Friday’s practice, rookie point guard Kay Felder will miss tomorrow’s season opener against the New York Knicks according to Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue.
Felder was elbowed at last Friday’s practice by veteran center Chris ‘Birdman’ Andersen and was placed in the NBA’s concussion protocol. The NBA’s protocol involves jogging, non-contact basketball drills and other tests that determine a player’s state after a hit to the head. To return to the court, a player has to pass the protocol.
Due to Felder’s concussion, Iman Shumpert will be the Cavs’ backup point guard on opening night. Shumpert did spend some time during the preseason at the one in addition to preparing to play point over the summer. It is also possible that guard Jordan McRae could see some extended minutes on Tuesday if Cleveland needs to fill minutes.
At this time, it’s unclear when Felder will be able to return to the court.
