The Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday afternoon announced that Kevin Love will miss Game 3 of the NBA Finals due to a concussion he suffered during the second quarter of Game 2. The injury occurred on a blow to the head from Harrison Barnes. No whistle was blown on the play and the Cavs ultimately surrendered a three point play. From there, the game was never really competitive.
With Love in the concussion protocol, this was a decision that was out of his hands. He spent the entire offseason rehabbing his shoulder to get back to this moment, and now will find himself watching once again as he teammates run out of chances. The Cavs do have home court for the next two games, which function as near must-wins. LeBron James will likely play a lot of power forward, and perhaps Tristan Thompson will as well if Timofey Mozgov is brought in for minutes. Channing Frye seems like the other likely recipient of minutes. The Cavs could also just go small and give Richard Jefferson and Matthew Dellavedova more minutes.
There are plenty of options, it's just not clear how good they are against a team like the Warriors. We will see.
