The Magic of LeBron James

In Tuesday’s game against the Bulls, LeBron James made a rare start as point guard. James was deferred to step up for the team, in the absence of Isaiah Thomas due to injury. And the four-time MVP was nothing short of impressive at the point.

James hasn’t played point guard since 2005. But he still boasted 13 assists and scored 34 points in a 119-112 win over the Bulls. He’s also collected as many 30-point, 10-assist games at point guard as four other 2017 all-star point guards.

Now the argument comparing Magic Johnson and LeBron James has heated up. Personally, I'd choose LeBron James all day. Both are talented players, both hall of famers and both can get the job done. But I think LeBron James is the shinier newer version of Magic Johnson. LeBron James knows how to play all positions making him a valuable player to have. He can anticipate plays as well as where his teammates should be, also making him a great leader to the squad.

This doesn’t mean I don’t think Magic is an incredible player. I could list stat after stat. But both players have impressive stats. Let me explain.

There will always be newer younger athletes who rise up and challenge the greats. But that doesn’t erase their accomplishments. The greats are still greats, but younger athletes are learning from them and getting better because of it.

When Steph Curry led the Warriors to defeat the Cavaliers, winning two championships, everyone jumped on the Steph bandwagon. And the media argued that LeBron is losing steam. Just because a younger athlete comes along and challenges the hierarchy of your stats doesn’t erase everything you’ve accomplished. Records are meant to be broken. Great athletes strive for the record of his/her hero and top it.

The same goes for Magic and LeBron. Magic Johnson is one of the greats and always will be. Nothing can erase that fact. But LeBron James learned everything from great players like Magic and built on it. That’s why he’s breaking records and superseding Michael Jordan and even Magic’s records.

LeBron James is my pick. But years from now, there will be some new extraordinary hot shot that we’re all going to compare to LeBron James. Guaranteed.
