According to The Athletic’s Jason Lloyd, Derrick Rose wants to return to the Cavaliers. Per Lloyd, Rose has been in contact with GM Koby Altman in the last few days and indicated that he wanted to return.
The Cavs are expected to make an announcement regarding Rose’s future on Sunday, per a pool reporter’s discussion with Altman prior to the Cavs’ Saturday game against the Grizzlies. Rose has been away from the team since Nov. 23. He’s also missed 16 games this season due to injury. Per ESPN, Rose would leave $80 million in money on the table from Adidas were he to walk away from basketball right now.
Rose’s return will be an interesting story to follow. Will he be healthy enough to play right away? How will the Cavs use him considering they’ve played their best basketball of the season with him out? And how will his return line up with Isaiah Thomas’? The Cavs are also 7-1 with Calderon in the starting lineup, so it’s possible that Rose will be pushed down the depth chart when he returns.
The Cavs’ announcement should offer more definite information, so stay tuned.
