The future of Derrick Rose and the Cleveland Cavaliers is still unclear. While Rose has maintained communication with the team, he is yet to confirm whether or not he will return to the team.
As Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com reported, there is currently no timetable for a Derrick Rose return:
Derrick Rose is interested in returning to the Cavaliers and the team would have him back, but there was no determination as of Sunday afternoon as to when Rose would be back at work.
A league source told cleveland.com that the timing of Rose's formal return to Cleveland Clinic Courts -- the Cavs' headquarters -- was still being determined.
As Vardon noted, there may be motivations beyond playing fueling Rose’s desire to return to the team:
Also, Rose could forfeit a reported $80 million from adidas if he walked away from basketball.
Should Rose return to the team, it’s hard to envision exactly what his role would be. Isaiah Thomas is believed to be returning by mid-December and Dwyane Wade has emerged as a leading Sixth Man of the Year candidate with his play running the second unit.
Rose would likely takeover third string point guard responsibilities if he returned. That role may have gone to Iman Shumpert if he was healthy, as he provides more versatility. But with him sidelined for the next two months, that seems to be the most likely role for Rose, should he return.
