Cavs assign Kay Felder to the Canton Charge ahead of D-League playoffs

Felder will play in at least one D-League playoff game.

Kay Felder is headed back to the D-League and will play for the Canton Charge as the Cavs’ D-League affiliate starts its playoff run. The team announced Felder’s assignment Monday in a press release.

The Charge start their first round series Wednesday against Raptors 905, the D-League affiliate of the Toronto Raptors. Felder is likely to start for Canton, as the team’s normal starter Quinn Cook, is still signed with the New Orleans Pelicans. Felder has started in the other games he’s played with Canton. With Larry Sanders having been recalled by the Cavs, Felder will be only Cleveland player active for Canton as of right now.

Raptors 905 enter the playoffs with the best record in the D-League, so Felder should be tested in Wednesday’s game. It’s not yet known if Felder will travel with the Charge when the series shift to the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada where Raptors 905 plays its home games. If the series goes the full three games, it will wrap up on April 11 - a day before the Cavs’ regular season ends. The second game in the series takes place on April 8. The Cavs do not have games on April 8 or April 11.

The move also means that Felder will not be available Tuesday when the Cavs host the Orlando Magic or Wednesday when Cleveland faces the Boston Celtics. This may indicate that the Cavs do not plan to rest any of their key players in either game.

In 11 games with the Charge, Felder is averaging 29.9 points and 6 assists per game. In 41 games with the Cavs, he’s averaging 4 points and 1.3 assists per game.
