For those that don’t know, J.R. Smith and his wife Shirley gave birth to their daughter Kota in January. Kota was born roughly five months premature and as a result has been staying at the Cleveland Clinic Children's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to receive treatment.
Smith’s daughter is still receiving treatment to this day. So for Mother’s Day he and his wife decided to surprise the other mothers at the NCIU with a massive flower delivery, according to TMZ:
"When the flowers arrived I pushed the cart and [her older daughter, Demi] placed an arrangement of flowers in every room." Shirley says ... "It was super special and we both enjoyed it."
As for Kota, Shirley says J.R. arrived to the hospital after Cavs practice and the baby took a nap "in her favorite spot" ... dad's chest.
This is such a heartwarming story and another look into a side of Smith that we don’t get to see often.
With the pursuit of another championship and this thumb injury getting a lot of the attention this season, the health complications of his daughter hasn’t been discussed often. I can’t imagine how tough it would be to focus on anything else with a child in intensive care. I’m sure the kindness shown by the Smith family helped bring some joy to other families that are in the same situation.
