Dwyane Wade will wear No. 9 with the Cavs

When he suits up for the Cleveland Cavaliers next season, Dwyane Wade will not be wearing his customary No. 3 jersey.

According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Wade will wear No. 9 with the Cavs. No. 9 was the jersey number Wade wore for Team USA at the 2008 Olympics. Isaiah Thomas is wearing No. 3 with the Cavs, as the No. 4 jersey he wore with the Boston Celtics last season is held by Iman Shumpert.

Wade getting No. 9 also forced rookie Cedi Osman to switch numbers to No. 16. Osman wore No. 9 at media day and No. 6 for Anadolu Efes and the Turkish National Team.

Wade’s number switch is not unlike what LeBron James did when he joined the Miami Heat. Because Miami retired Michael Jordan’s No. 23 (even though he never played for the Heat), James wore No. 6 during his four years in South Beach. No. 6, of course, the number James has worn when playing for Team USA.
