J.R. Smith is under investigation for allegedly grabbing and tossing a fan’s cellphone in New York City.
A report of the investigation surfaced via TMZ on Wednesday morning, and the New York City Police Department confirmed the investigation to Fear the Sword’s Chris Manning.
Smith has not been charged with any crime, but according the TMZ, the police “would like to speak with him.”
Smith allegedly grabbed a cell phone from a fan who asked to take a selfie with him on Sunday morning around 2:30 a.m. outside of The Park in Chelsea, according to TMZ. After Smith allegedly told the fan no, he proceeded to take a picture anyway. That’s when, according to the report, Smith allegedly grabbed the phone and threw it into a nearby construction site.
This isn’t the first time Smith has allegedly gotten into it with a fan. Back in 2015, a 19-year-old man claimed that Smith choked him outside of a New York pizza place. The man was allegedly heckling Smith for being traded from the Knicks. Ultimately, no charges were filed.
