With Sam Dekker reportedly incoming via trade and a deadline of 5 PM to avoid paying him his full $1.5 million salary for next season, the writing was on the wall for Okaro White’s future as a Cleveland Cavalier.
The Cavaliers have waived the swingman who spent the end of last season on the roster, and will only owe him $772K of his $1.5M salary due next season, per Joe Vardon.
White, 25, would’ve made $772,000 from the Cavs, whether he was on the final roster or not when the season starts. The team had until 5 p.m. today to waive him before he was guaranteed any money.
A source said the Cavs asked White if he’d consider extending the deadline to guarantee his salary to the start of the regular season, and he declined.
White was solid over the course of Summer League, but it’s clear that the team wanted to move forward with Dekker as the team’s swing player at small forward and power forward moving into next season.
The team only has 11 players under contract currently, with David Nwaba, Dekker and potentially RFA Rodney Hood that would bring that total up to 14.
