According to Cavs head coach Larry Drew himself, he has not talked to the team about his future beyond this season.
“No discussion about my future and we’ll wait to until the end of the season to discuss that,” Drew said prior the Cavs’ home game against the Spurs on Sunday.
Drew took over the Cavs job six games into the season after Tyronn Lue was fired. After some negotiations, he signed for the rest of the year and received a small guarantee for next season, even if he isn’t the Cavs’ head coach.
It is wildly expected that Drew will not be the Cavs’ head coach next year. As early as Jan. 24, The Athletic reported that the Cavs were already starting their head coaching search and that Drew was not a candidate. So, Drew’s comments aren’t exactly a surprise. In all likelihood, he will coach Sunday and Tuesday in the season finale against the Hornets, finish up any remaining business and be on his way.
Drew also said that Kevin Love, who has missed Cleveland’s last three games with shoulder soreness, would play on Sunday. Nik Stauskas, however, will miss the game with a lower back contusion.
